The Reason and the Plan

Visiting Cornwall and Yorkshire

Bob is a big fan of two public TV series "Doc Martin" and "Last of the Summer Wine" He was becoming more reluctant to travel, but I was not ready to stop. So I proposed to that we go to England and visit the places where those series were filmed and he accepted that idea. This was the first of four trips we took in 2015. Bob had been to England twice before and I had visited three times. His first visit was in 1956 on his plebe cruise at the US Naval Academy. The second time was when we visited our daughter and went on a 2002 Narrowboat cruise. My first visit was in 1950 with my parents, and I went back to London for a few days in 2007 with my grandson.

In Doc Martin, Martin Clunes plays Dr Martin Ellingham, a brilliant and successful surgeon, who has developed haemophobia (a fear of blood), forcing him to stop practising surgery. He ends up as the sole GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn (In real life, Port Isaac). Despite his medical expertise, Ellingham is grouchy, pugnacious, and lacks social skills. He feels he is performing his duties in a professional and by-the-book manner, not wasting time chatting. This doesn't sit well with the local villagers. "Doc Martin" as the villages call him, dresses formally in a business suit and tie, regardless of the weather or the occasion, and he never takes off his jacket, even when delivering babies.

The village of Portween is almost another charcter in the series, and the photography of the village is one of the reasons to watch.

So after we got back from St Croix in December 2014, we decided to visit the Doc Martin location in Port Isaac before filming started because Bob thought that the village would be too crowded when they were filming. After many inquiries, I found that filming was to start March 23rd so we were going to go in the middle of March - In spite of the fact that our daughter who had lived in England thought that the weather would be terrible - rainy and cold at that time of year.

Over the years, we have both watched Last of the Summer Wine which which is one of the longest running series ever. The first episode was filmed January 4, 1973. and the last episode date was August 29, 2010. The series was set and filmed in and around Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, England, so we were also going to visit Holmfirth.

Cleggy, Compo and Foggy of Last of the Summer Wine

Last of the Summer Wine centred on a trio of old men and their misadventures. Cleggy (Norman Clegg played by Peter Salis) was the one character who did the whole series. Compo (Compo Simonite) was played by Bill Owen who died in 1999 and was replaced by his son Tom Owen who played Tom Simonite. The third old man varied. Originally it was Cyril Blamire played by Michael Bates. For a short time it was Seymour Utterthwaite played by Michael Aldridge. Sometimes it was Foggy Dewhirst played by Brandon Wilde, and most of the rest of the time it was it was Herbert Truelove (Truly of the Yard) played by Frank Thornton.

Lynde came on Thursday and got me packed. Bob started packing Friday while I was watching the Utah Regional (the robotics competition that our grandson was competing in). Jean the cat sitter came to pick up the house keys Saturday.

I started to do email today and the computer malfunctioned, so I've had it in the hands of the Geek Squad for the last two hours. They think I have accidentally activated hot keys. I have to have better control of the little finger of my left hand. Either that or look to see what I'm typing.

So we are going to leave in about an hour.

A Quick trip to Penn Yan

View 2015 Compo and Doc Martin on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

Packed on Monday. Went to the doctor's office Tuesday to get blood drawn for appointment next week. Their computer was down and so I had to go back Wednesday. Jean came to get the key Thursday. I didn't stop the mail or paper as we are only going to be gone Friday, and Saturday and will be home Monday night. Talked to our grandson, but I had already packed so I didn't change what I took.

Bob forgot his camera. I didn't take a pillow, and I forgot to change from my plain gold travel wedding ring to the real one with my engagement ring. It was misty and foggy and rained off an on all day. We went up by way of Croom Road and the GPS accepted the change (i.e. not going up 5 to the DC beltway) without complaint. Then we got on the Baltimore Beltway and went up I83.

and got a map (because I had not been north in some time and all I had were maps for south of us) and had a bathroom break.

We pulled off in York to eat, because the GPS said there were places there that weren't chains. Got gas. Eventually we found the South York Diner

The advertisement out front said
BREAKFAST starting at 2.95
LUNCH starting at 4.95
40 DINNER SPECIALS UNDER $10
Free BEER and WINE
It looked like it would be a good place for dinner (dinner for two for $19.95) but not so cheap for lunch.

but I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. When I looked up the address of this place later, I found that in January 2016 it had failed a health inspection, but the items were corrected to the satisfaction of the inspector.

Got back underway at 1:30. Got lost in Harrisburg as the GPS didn't take us the way I thought we would go - we went right up through town. Also got a little bit lost in Williamsport. We were driving along by the river and it looked like it was very high. Got to the NY border about 5 and were in Painted Post by 5:30.

Here there was a problem. The GPS said the Hampton Inn was next to Dennys, but it wasn't. That hotel is now a Holiday Inn Express. Turned out it moved. Finally I called them (I had the foresight to put the number in my phone) and we eventually got there.

The NEW Hampton Inn was kind of isolated and not near any restaurants. We were comfortable there, but I was too tired to drive someplace to eat, so we called and had food delivered from a pizza place (OIP - Original Italian Pizza) I don't remember exactly what I had but I think there was cake.

Tried to call my grandson with no success. I left a message for my son and he said that when he tried to call my number he got a message asking him for a pin. He gave me my grandsons number and I called with no luck. Then his fiancee texted me on facebook and gave me a different number and I called that, and this time I got him. He said he tried to call me twice with the same problem as his dad.

I have finally figured out the problem. First, I had a password on the phone to unlock it every time I turned it on. Disabled that. Then I had Lynde call me today on my cell and realized that I had all calls on the cell forwarded to my home phone. I have to remember that if I am expecting a call, I have to disable the forwarding feature.

11 April 2015 - Saturday
Left the hotel on Saturday about 10:00 to drive to Penn Yan. Penn Yan is an incorporated village in Yates County, New York which surrounds the northern tip of the east branch of Keuka Lake. The early settlement was unofficially called Union, According to county tradition, the name was changed to reflect the origin of the settlers - one group of which came from Pennsylvania and the other group whose members were Yankees. Penn Yan has been the county seat of Yates County since 1824, when the county was chartered. The people there are very welcoming, and it is a beautiful area

and then went to a place called Seneca Farms for a snack lunch (because we were going to be eating later at the shower). They have fried chicken (and various other ways of eating chicken), sandwiches (Such as signature sandwiches "Rancheroo" and "Buffalo Chicken Steak), salads, fried fish, shrimp and clams, tacos, corn fritters and ice cream.

Making ice cream was how they started 40 years ago. They have over 50 flavors of ice cream. They also sell ice cream cakes, and Seneca Farms t-shirts. You put in your order and pay at the counter and then find a seat and they bring the food to you. I think my daughter in law had a Hot dog
