on greatgrandmaR's travel map.
Packed on Monday. Went to the doctor's office Tuesday to get blood drawn for appointment next week. Their computer was down and so I had to go back Wednesday. Jean came to get the key Thursday. I didn't stop the mail or paper as we are only going to be gone Friday, and Saturday and will be home Monday night. Talked to our grandson, but I had already packed so I didn't change what I took.
Friday 10 April 2015
Left about 9:45.
Bob forgot his camera. I didn't take a pillow, and I forgot to change from my plain gold travel wedding ring to the real one with my engagement ring. It was misty and foggy and rained off an on all day. We went up by way of Croom Road and the GPS accepted the change (i.e. not going up 5 to the DC beltway) without complaint. Then we got on the Baltimore Beltway and went up I83.
We got to the Pennsylvania border at about 12:10
and stopped at the Visitor's Center
and got a map (because I had not been north in some time and all I had were maps for south of us) and had a bathroom break.
We pulled off in York to eat, because the GPS said there were places there that weren't chains. Got gas. Eventually we found the South York Diner
The advertisement out front said
BREAKFAST starting at 2.95
LUNCH starting at 4.95
40 DINNER SPECIALS UNDER $10
Free BEER and WINE
It looked like it would be a good place for dinner (dinner for two for $19.95) but not so cheap for lunch.
I had
and Bob had
They had a TV at each table
but I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. When I looked up the address of this place later, I found that in January 2016 it had failed a health inspection, but the items were corrected to the satisfaction of the inspector.
Got back underway at 1:30. Got lost in Harrisburg as the GPS didn't take us the way I thought we would go - we went right up through town. Also got a little bit lost in Williamsport. We were driving along by the river and it looked like it was very high. Got to the NY border about 5 and were in Painted Post by 5:30.
Here there was a problem. The GPS said the Hampton Inn was next to Dennys, but it wasn't. That hotel is now a Holiday Inn Express. Turned out it moved. Finally I called them (I had the foresight to put the number in my phone) and we eventually got there.
The NEW Hampton Inn was kind of isolated and not near any restaurants. We were comfortable there, but I was too tired to drive someplace to eat, so we called and had food delivered from a pizza place (OIP - Original Italian Pizza) I don't remember exactly what I had but I think there was cake.
Tried to call my grandson with no success. I left a message for my son and he said that when he tried to call my number he got a message asking him for a pin. He gave me my grandsons number and I called with no luck. Then his fiancee texted me on facebook and gave me a different number and I called that, and this time I got him. He said he tried to call me twice with the same problem as his dad.
I have finally figured out the problem. First, I had a password on the phone to unlock it every time I turned it on. Disabled that. Then I had Lynde call me today on my cell and realized that I had all calls on the cell forwarded to my home phone. I have to remember that if I am expecting a call, I have to disable the forwarding feature.
11 April 2015 - Saturday
Left the hotel on Saturday about 10:00 to drive to Penn Yan. Penn Yan is an incorporated village in Yates County, New York which surrounds the northern tip of the east branch of Keuka Lake. The early settlement was unofficially called Union, According to county tradition, the name was changed to reflect the origin of the settlers - one group of which came from Pennsylvania and the other group whose members were Yankees. Penn Yan has been the county seat of Yates County since 1824, when the county was chartered. The people there are very welcoming, and it is a beautiful area
The GPS took us on some unpaved farm roads and I haven't really identified what road it was. It was after we went through Tyrone.
Called our grandson when we were about 10 minutes out and he met us at his fiancee's parents house.
We met everyone and then our son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter arrived.
We went to see where our grandson worked, and the flying club he belongs to (apparently he and our son are both going to learn to fly)
and then went to a place called Seneca Farms for a snack lunch (because we were going to be eating later at the shower). They have fried chicken (and various other ways of eating chicken), sandwiches (Such as signature sandwiches "Rancheroo" and "Buffalo Chicken Steak), salads, fried fish, shrimp and clams, tacos, corn fritters and ice cream.
Making ice cream was how they started 40 years ago. They have over 50 flavors of ice cream. They also sell ice cream cakes, and Seneca Farms t-shirts. You put in your order and pay at the counter and then find a seat and they bring the food to you. I think my daughter in law had a
Bob had
I had a hamburger combo which included potato salad, mac and cheese and corn fritters (because that is one thing they are famous for)
Then we went by the house that they are buying.
After that we went to the shower, which was nice.
We met a lot of our grandson's fiancee's relatives, but I have a hard time keeping them straight.
We left about 5 and went back to the hotel. We ate for dinner what was left over from last night.
12 April 2015
On Sunday, we left the hotel about 9:30.
We stopped once north of Harrisburg for gas and lunch at Burger King
and were back in St. Mary's County at the WaWa where Halfway House used to be by 4:00.
Our third trip in 2015 was in August -We revisited Costa Rica I wanted to watch the turtle nesting
